The Development of the Cult of St. John of Nepomuk to Canonization

The cult of St. John of Nepomuk was one of the characteristic features of life in the Habsburg Empire and other European catholic countries in the early modern period. The origins of veneration for the medieval martyr were tied to Prague, to his tomb in the cathedral, to the Metropolitan Chapter. The saint became famous above all for the conviction that he gave his life for the preservation of the confessional secret. With his death he preserved the good name of the Czech Queen Joan, who confessed to him; on the other hand, he is said to have punished those who were disrespectful of his own posthumous reputation and grave. He therefore became an immensely popular defender of honour and reputation, values highly valued in the early modern society. Under the influence of the Prague Chapter, St. John's veneration was taken up by the Habsburgs, the Catholic rulers who ascended the throne of John's torturer, Wenceslaus IV, and John's spiritual daughter, Joan. They venerated the saint as one of the patron saints of the Bohemian kingdom, which they ruled. The recatholicization of this kingdom and its associated countries enabled the growth of St John's veneration, which by the end of the 17th century had already begun to spread vigorously beyond their borders. Baroque devontional picture in the Czech Lands or Theme of Palladium země České in graphic creation of the 17th and 18th centuries

The thesis is in the form of theoretical-practical and its subject is baroque devonational graphics. Individual chapters acquaint the reader with its history, purpose and other contexts related to it. For example, the Marian cult, the cult of saints or pilgrimage. The thesis continues to elaborate on the topic of devocation graphics through the names of Baroque graphic artists and engravers who worked on our territory and their works influenced the production of religious graphics. The final chapters of the theoretical part are devoted to the analysis of religious graphics depicting the Palladium of Bohemia motif. The practical part of the thesis processes the knowledge gained from the theoretical part and works with the Palladium of Bohemia motif and converts it within the author's creation into devocation graphics.

Baroque legends and cults of virgin martyrs

5 Abstract The theme of my thesis is baroque legends and cults of virgines capitales. The introduction into the topic is covered by three chapters dedicated to hagiography, baroque literature and baroque piety. This general part is followed by chapters concerning virgines capitales, their legends and baroque cults. Focusing mainly on baroque legend collections originating in Czech lands, I also take into account the medieval hagiographic tradition. In my thesis I cover multitude of manifestations of esteem towards virgines capitales, such as pilgrimages to places dedicated to them, folklore plays and other folk customs.

The Image of the Ruler in the Early Middle Age in Hagiographical Sources

The subject of the thesis is to analyse the image of the Merovingian ruler in hagiographical sources concentrating on the period from the accession of Chlotar II. to the Frankish thrones in 613 until the fall of the dynasty in 751. While based on the texts, its task is to evaluate the nature of the Merovingian power, which underwent a process of Christianization by Church after baptism of Clovis I. The analysis reveals to what extent the inherited patristic ideas about political power were applied, and at the same time it comments on the issue of pagan and Christian sacrality. The study also deals with the relationship between royal power and ecclesiastical institutions in terms of administrative and spiritual, while referring to its important role in the change of dynasties.
